Melissa Hartfiel

Melissa Harfiel is a web and graphic designer and photographer who runs her own design company, Fine Lime Designs, focusing on tourism, food and creative arts industries. When she isn’t doing creative work for other people, she’s writing the food photography blog, Eyes Bigger Than My Stomach. She is also working with two other Canadian food bloggers to launch Food Bloggers of Canada, an organization that will give Canadian food bloggers the opportunity to network with other bloggers.

Photography, cooking and gardening are Melissa’s release from being in front of a computer screen all day.

Sometimes I need to have that feeling of literally getting my hands dirty and making something come to life, whether it’s a photo, a plant or a dish. Food photography was just a natural extension of those three loves. It’s the most challenging type of photography I’ve ever done and I’m still very much a beginner.

Melissa says that strawberries are one of her favorite fresh fruits and recalls that one of her oldest memories is of her mom taking her and her younger brother “u-picking” at local farms.

I still try to go every year! Mostly, my brother and I sat in the dirt eating the sweet berries. I prefer them fresh, especially in my cereal every morning or in a spinach salad but I always try to get enough in season to freeze for the rest of the year. I put them in muffins, crumbles, pies, smoothies and I love mixing them with rhubarb for a compote. How can I not blog about them – they’re beautiful and just beg to have their photo taken. Mixing them with lemons is a visual feast!

And that’s just what she did in her recipe for her Strawberry Lemon bars. She took the inspiration from two other recipes by Marc Matsumoto and Nicole Weston of Baking Bites. Don’t forget to check out that recipe and all the other recipes we have on the site.
