Winterstar in the news

The word is out about Florida’s newest strawberry variety, Winterstar. My Fox Tampa Bay, the Tampa Bay Times and ABC 28 Action News recently published articles outlining the strengths of this new Florida strawberry variety from the University of Florida’s Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Wimauma.

The new Winterstar variety is in its final tests with about 40,000 plants now bearing fruit in local fields. Look forward to seeing this variety at your local grocer.

A cross between the popular Radiance and a variety called Earlibrite, Winterstar bears some resemblance to its parent plants. Its plump fruits come in early yields, Whitaker said, but it also sports a brighter red color that keeps it from looking overripe.

My Fox Tampa Bay produced a video segment covering the new berry. You can find the video embedded below. Lloyd Sowers had this to say about the new berry.

I confirmed that by comparing the taste of Winterstar to the old Radiance berry at Spivey Farms, south of Plant City. The Winterstar definitely tasted sweeter to me.

It even made the front page of Tampa Bay’s ABC 28 Action News with an article and accompanying video.
